Enter The Social Experiment

A story in London’s Guardian newspaper reveals what many in poorer countries have already known for a long time, that is, even those that make it out of poverty, tend to fall right back into it. It continues to be social (drugs, alcoholism, early pregnancy, lack of education, poor life choices), economic ( debt, lack of savings, inflation and spending) and cultural (anti establishment, disillusionment, societal malaise and ingrained attitudes) forces that block escape from poverty or pull them back into it.

Drawing on household panel surveys, the report by the Chronic Poverty Advisory Network (CPAN), found that in rural Kenya and in South Africa, 30-40% of those who escaped from poverty, fell back, rising to 60% in Ethiopia between 1999-2009.
