Anyone who works an 8 am – 5 pm job is not a good subject for a story. The responsibilities of 40 hours a week just isn’t conducive to telling an inspiring tale. That’s why authors, screenwriters, etc. look for characters whose vocations allow for a flexible work day. You can’t be off saving the planet or tracking down a murderer if you have to submit vacation or sick days through human resources.
Pay attention to the jobs of characters in your favorite movies or books. Chances are they are newspaper reporters, writers, book editors, lawyers, private investigators, artists, musicians, etc. They need flexibility to be in an adventure.
Yet most people still work 8 am – 5 pm jobs; not very adventurous of us, sadly.
