Is Age a Game Changer?…

Mktg Lottie

age image

As the roar of the crowds get louder, the competition gets hotter, and as the eager subs wait eagerly in the wing warming up for their next big break, graduates throughout the world anticipate the blow of the final whistle of success.

As I study my diary and as I ‘plan to plan’ the last few weeks of my degree, I can’t help but take a cross sectional view on the big bad jobs market and its competition, and ask myself, is age a game changer?

The optimistic side of me looks at this from an advantageous stance, considering ‘life’ ‘experience’ and certainly a crowded graduate CV, nothing but a positive attribute and certainly one that gives the competitive advantage.

However, following my last encouraging and up beat blog, I bring things back down to earth slightly and crowd source opinion on the split vote matter.

I have once been…

Soft Skills for Interviewing- Recruiters and candidate’s secrets

Empyrean Consulting, Inc.

Assessing “Soft Skills”
Information from our recruiter
Melanie Kirk

Remember from the Interviewing Guideline Sheet-Research has shown that interviewing is an unreliable predictor of job performance. Decisions are made too quickly or are biased by a number of factors. Independent raters often disagree in their evaluation of the same candidate. While interviews may never be a highly valued predictor of success, a few basic guidelines will improve their predictive power.

I. Questions to reveal Integrity/Honesty/Trustworthiness

1. Discuss a time when your integrity was challenged.
2. What would you do if someone asked you to do something against company values or your own values?
3. Have you ever experienced a loss for doing what is right?
4. In what business situations do you feel honesty would be appropriate?
5. If you saw a co-worker do something dishonest, would you tell your boss? What would you do about it?

II. Questions to…

The document that WILL MAKE YOU STAND OUT in an interview

The Better Career

Following my last blog, I want to show you a smart way to stand out from the crowd during the interview process. One way to do that is by creating a proposal document…

I actually got the idea from a relative who was conducting graduate interviews at a leading car manufacturer. Basically, during one interview a graduate candidate brought in an additional document to their CV and job specification. They brought a proposal document. But, what constitutes a proposal document you might ask?…

A proposal document contains information about the job role, company who are hiring, their history, candidate competencies and further questions the candidate has. It is formatted like a report and acts as a reference for the interviewer after the interview. But, what are the benefits to creating a proposal document?

  1. It makes you stand out and memorable in the mind of the interviewer.
  2. It shows the interviewer…

Leaving a job can sometimes be harder than finding one…

Please send your CV and covering letter to...

16 March 2014

Today after almost six years of moaning about my job and the people I work with I have decided to do something about it. Leave.

I’ve not handed my notice in yet, but at least I’ve finally decided to make a stand. Small steps they say…

I’ve decided to write about what happens next. To be honest I’m not entirely sure. I’ve reached that point where I’m not too sure I want to carry on doing what I am doing  – I work as a full time TV producer/journalist for an international company.

Why am I leaving?  Well without going into detail it’s those common factors that most people probably dislike about their jobs; bad management, bullying, feeling under valued, being over micro-managed and unable to do the job you originally signed up for – all play a part and well, it becomes a bit soul…

Spinning and swimming and sinking.

Amy Lauren

I have nothing to say. I have nothing to do, no inspiration. Not a shred.

While I can say those things with absolute honesty, it remains vexing to me how I can simultaneously say that my eyes are beginning to cross from so much reading. I have so many thoughts swirling around in my head that I’m beginning to worry my brain might actually scramble and dribble out of my ears. I want to do so many things, travel so many paths, but day after day I find myself going through the motions and winding down in front of the TV (usually dividing my attention between the big screen on the wall and the tiny, intimate one in my hands).

I wanted to teach. I went to college and got my degree in Fine Art. This was to prepare me for pursuing my MFA, and following that, I would live…

Get a job …

Live Free Or Die

Tell your highschooler, “Get a job. And then get another job. Do your jobs well. While you’re working, keep a watch out for a better job. Your standard of living is determined by how smart you are and how motivated you are to improve your life. It is up to you to advance on merit, and be worth more than you’re getting paid now. Slackers get fired.”

Are you still letting your 28 year old, unemployed daughter live with you?

How many people do you know who do not put any effort into finding a job? How many of them said they’re waiting to see if unemployment benefits will be extended or increased before they start looking for a job.

No slacker is entitled to anything.

We must stop subsidizing the healthy people who refuse to work, the people who put all their efforts into scamming the system (or scamming…

“College is a refuge from hasty judgement.” -Robert Frost

Not to Clear the Air

Going to college is a defining decision in your life, and I know very few people* who didn’t need a college degree to do what they wanted. Those who did not go to college are heavily considering going back, at minimum. For my parents’ generation, going to college was quickly becoming the expectation instead of the exception. For my generation, it is the standard.

I already wrote about how college is harder than people remember, which I still hold is true. Where I think the disconnect comes from, though, is that college does not necessarily prepare you for the corporate working world.

I’m not saying you don’t learn a lot, or that you’re not used to working this hard. Honestly, in a lot of my classes I worked harder than in a few of my jobs. Which makes sense; I think the mental strain of university-level work should be much…

“And You Thought Christie Was Bad”: Report, Scott Walker’s Jobs Agency Pouring Money Into Red Districts, Neglecting Others

Wisconsin governor Scott Walker has long been criticized for his state’s poor jobs numbers — but now the potential 2016 presidential candidate is under fire for the locations of the jobs that have been created.

In 2011, under Walker, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation was established as the state’s largest private-sector jobs agency. The WEDC’s purpose is to develop and facilitate economic programs that create new jobs or subsidize already existing ones. Using taxpayer money, the WEDC awards, grants, and loans money to businesses across the state.

According to a Citizen Action of Wisconsin report released in February, however, data reported by the WEDC shows “[jobs] impact concentrated in a handful of legislative districts” – specifically, districts represented by Republicans.

Furthermore, because red districts in the state are benefiting more from the WEDC than other districts are, members of the Republican Assembly who are in leadership positions benefit from a…

The Servant

This is Real Life.

I have served my duty
throughout my life
I’ve kept arms warm
in the snow
Through many storms
they stayed dry

I have been cut
and torn
to bare the unseen
when the sun come out
and sometimes then
I get used to clean

I continue to wrap up
the extensions of my owner
containing them
no matter their size

At some point I’m thrown away
and I crawl through
the mounds of trash
that continue to build up

There in the depths
is where I change my career
along with the others
who have been retired
Instead of covering arms
we now cover spines

Covering up the naked backbones
filled with words
my duty remains the same
but the owner differs
I am more appreciated
yet less seen

I continue to wrap up
the extensions of my owner
containing them
no matter their size

That is where I lie

Last you heard I was job searching like crazy and picking up random odd jobs here and there. I had a few hours with the Camp MissFits job I do. Well, now pretty much all my hours from there were cut. BUT I wasn’t fired, per say. It’s a long story. I’ll try to make it short and understandable while trying to be professional and respectful.

Let’s see, how do I say this? Basically the business was losing revenue and my boss needed to save money. So, she had to cut everyone’s’…

Really just to make myself feel better..

Is this real life?

..but I’ll share with all of you as well. So, I’ve been having a hard time dealing with my current life status. Not to beat a dead horse, but clearly I’m unhappy with my job, and that seems to spill over and impact me in other areas of my life (emotionally that is). I’ve also been struggling with depression for the last little over a year, so that doesn’t help any. So what I’m going to do right now, is just jot down a few things I have in my life currently (or have to look forward to) that will boost my spirits and help me stay positive…

4 Quick Tips To Increase Your Resume Being Read By The Right People

Careers Blog

sunflowerStand out from the crowd!

For every one job posting, there can be over 100 candidates.  I know this number can seem overwhelming, but do not panic! Here are simple steps you can take to improve your odds of making the initial cut.

1) Tweak your resume to match the position. The days of sending the same resume for every opening are over. You don’t need to overhaul the whole thing, but matching your qualifications to the job listing can mean the difference between getting selected or being overlooked.

2) Quantify! Many people simply list their job duties and responsibilities and hope for the best. However, your resume is not just a laundry list of what you do or did at previous positions. Show the employer how you saved your company time, effort or money. For example, did you suggest a new idea that made a difference? Translate that to…

“Stripping Away The Rhetoric”: Rebuilding The American Dream, One Insurance Policy At A Time

The Republicans give lots of reasons for their opposition to the Affordable Care Act. Only two really matter.

One is politics. The other is money. More precisely, big-business money.

Like Social Security and Medicare, the expansion of health insurance coverage is making voters more predisposed to support the politicians that championed the law — and they’re all Democrats.

Meanwhile, the more Americans benefit from this new law, the more Republicans are being forced to modify and mellow their rejection of it.

Within a few years, it may become as politically suicidal to openly attack the Affordable Care Act as it would be to call for abolishing Medicare.

Of course, Republicans can’t say they oppose the reform law often called “Obamacare” because it boosts the Democratic Party’s prospects. So they say it violates states’ rights. They say it infringes on individual liberty. They say it hurts small businesses. They say it…

A Student Journalist’s Perspective.

Studying for the Current Job Climate

With the current job climate affecting all students, Third year Swansea University journalist student and The Waterfront features editor, Samantha Booth, shares her thoughts and tips about finding a job after university in an interview for this blog.

1.) What do you think about the current job climate for Swansea graduates?

“It entirely depends on what you want to go into but those with special interests seem more likely to be employed on a graduate wage because of the specialty of their studies, however, I think that the market is tough for anyone at the moment”

2.) Do you think a degree still stands out to employers? Or are extra-curricular experiences needed?

“Again, it depends on your field. As an Arts and Humanities student, I think it’s very important to get work experience whilst studying; university offers the right climate to pursue other activities that can enhance your CV, especially…

Who am I?

Brandon Balogh

My name is Brandon Balogh and I am a graduating senior from the Ohio State University. My major is New Media and Communication Technology, focusing in Communication Technology Management. This means that I have studied the way technology and media are transforming the field of communication. I have studied communication theory (psychology), computer science, design, and business  to better understand interactive technology and user experience.

What I noticed over the 9 years I have spent working in a retail pharmacy setting, is that many companies are struggling to keep up with technological advancements available to them. I have always been an early adopter of technology, being able to use and teach others how to use a piece of technology. My education has taught me  additional skills to help others use technology effectively in the workplace, allowing me to be a liaison between leadership and technical workers.

My ideal internship/job would…

Get a Job Through Social Media

alexis hardman

Finding a job is hard. Trust me, I know from first hand experience. However, even harder is finding the right place to look. The fact that my social media (that we all know students are on constantly) can help me find a job is simply amazing. You mean I can catch up on my friends and find a job at the same time?? It’s true and the following platforms can help.

1. Twitter

  • You can look up hashtags such as #jobs or #hiring
  • Search in the search bar for things such as “jobs marketing”
  • And take time to tweet often and follow companies & people that are influential in your field

2. Facebook

  • Like pages of companies you are interested in to stay up to date
  • Make everything private except your work history and education
  • Take advantage of the new the “professional skills” section to highlight the skills you have…

Everything You Need to Know About Minimum Wage: Part II

Young Economics

Stimulating the Economy

The argument can be made that raising the minim wage to $10.10 would stimulate the economy due to more money spent on goods and services.  President Obama and additional researchers argue that lower-income workers, or those who depend on minimum wage, spend their earnings more quickly and locally than do higher-income workers.  In fact, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago noted that every $1.00 increase in the minimum wage would increase the spending of a low-wage worker’s household by $2,800 yearly.  This provides the local, small businesses with the customers and demand they need to maintain and expand their own labor forces.  As a result, we would see a reduction in the nation’s unemployment rate.  More specifically, our nation could be looking at 85,000 new jobs, which is 9,000 more than the job creation between November and December that yielded a .3% reduction in the unemployment rate…

Everything Must Change: Waiting on Perfection

TYGES Talent Consulting

by Tim Saumier, President of TYGES

I took both macro & micro economics in college and while I don’t remember much from the classes, as I think I got a C in one and a B in the other, the one thing that I do remember is the law of diminishing returns.  The law of diminishing returns (also law of diminishing marginal returns or law of increasing relative cost) states that in all productive processes, adding more of one factor of production while holding all others constant will at some point yield lower per-unit returns.

200906_11_perfection-1While working in corporate America I remember working with design engineers who just wanted to keep designing for what they believed was best for the customer when in fact, it seemed to be for the pursuit of perfection.  We would constantly discuss when enough was enough.  I translate this to the world that I live…

The Job I Was Hired For Is Not What Was Advertised

Tip Top Job

More commonly people are finding that they are being hired only to start the job and find that their roles and responsibilities are different to what they expected. It usually ends up in the newly hired employee wanting to leave and start the job hunt all over again rather than face up to the issue. Being caught up in such a difficult situation is not easy even if it was an accident on the company’s part or a deliberate change.

So, if you are faced with such a crisis, what should you do? The worst thing is to walk out. Communication here is key, even if you are going to find it so hard to confront you manager or boss.

DWP draws up plans to ditch ridiculed jobs website

DWP draws up plans to ditch ridiculed jobs website

The government has drawn up plans to scrap its official jobs website, Universal Jobmatch, after recognising it is too expensive and that its purpose is undermined by fake and repeat job entries, according to leaked internal communications from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP).

A cache of documents seen by the Guardian details how the government’s main website for job hunters – which tens of thousands of unemployed people have been required by the DWP to sign up to – is likely to be jettisoned when the contract for the service comes up for renewal in two years.

A year and a half after its launch, Universal Jobmatch has been ridiculed for hosting numerous fake jobs, including one for an MI6 “target elimination specialist” and “international couriers” for CosaNostra Holdings, as well as listings for pornographic websites.
